After 48 hours of hacking on healthcare specific topics, nearly 60 young talents wrapped up the event jointly hosted by Merck KGaA Darmstadt, Germany and H. Spectrum in Taipei, which was also our first ever Hackathon held in Asia!
Our company and H. Spectrum, a leading biomedical startup incubator/accelerator in Asia which is supported by Foxconn, announced the partnership to co-establish a healthcare-oriented Innovation Lab in Taiwan last year. Not long after the announcement, the very first event took place – A 48-hour hackathon that brought together students, entrepreneurs, HCPs and industry professionals aiming to find patient-centric solutions and accelerate access to health.
Kicked-off by BoonHuey Ee, General Manager of our company′s Biopharma business in Taiwan, along with Janik Weigel, Hackathon & Accelerator Program Manager at our Innovation Center and Anna Hung, Senior Product Manager of the Fertility Business of our Biopharma company in Taiwan, nearly 60 participants divided into 13 groups were given the task to work on 4 innovative topics including:
- Biosensing & Interfaces and Liquid Biopsy Technologies, which are two of the Innovation Fields identified by our Innovation Center. Participants are encouraged to find solutions related to our company's therapeutic areas by using biometric data to convert digital signals into non-invasive methods, allowing better management for healthcare data and different diseases.
- Patient Journey and Right Drug to Right Patient, namely solutions to optimize patients’ experience and precision medicine, are based on the demand of Taiwan's biomedical industry in recent years, relying on medical device and AI data analysis to further improve treatment options.
With the advises given by experts from our company as well as H. Spectrum, followed by various panel discussions and the teams’ hard works, 3 projects stood out from the final pitch with their solid solutions to tackle the problem they identified within 48 hours:
The 1st prize went to “MSupport” – the team that developed a platform aiming to encourage MS patients to be more complied on taking medicine/injection for a good cause.
The 2nd prize went to “Goddess and Her Period” – an idea that combines pH test paper with sanitary pads to help women prevent or seek treatment at the early stage when vaginitis occurs.
The 3rd prize went to SeizeDrive – a system containing a seizure detecting bracelet, an ADAS monitoring device and self-driving vehicle which ensure the safeness of seizure patients when they are sitting behind the wheel.
In addition to the winning teams that got money prizes ranging up to 50000 NT$, all participants are encouraged to further polish and submit their ideas to the official Merck KGaA Darmstadt, Germany and H. Spectrum Innovation Lab application phase that will kick-off on June 5th for the first time.
About the Innovation Lab:
The Incubator will be looking for 4 startups that will have the opportunity to gain mentorship, networking, as well as the opportunity to participate in the Selection Days to qualify for the Merck KGaA Darmstadt, Germany Accelerator program in the Innovation Center. Stay tuned as more announcements will be made in June!
